Staatstheater Nürnberg

Audio description

The Staatstheater Nürnberg, in cooperation with EveryBody Access Nürnberg, offers audio descriptions for select productions in all categories. These describe the scenic and visual happenings on the stage for audience members who are blind or visually impaired. The texts are devised specifically for individual productions by a team of seeing and blind individuals. During the production, the audio description is played live and can be followed via headphones with the “Sennheiser MobileConnect” app on the audience member’s personal smartphone.
Before the performance begins, users can also learn about the production’s set and costumes via a special introduction and subsequent tactile tour.

Information on the process

Tactile tour

The tactile tour is optional and begins two hours before the production starts. The meeting point for opera and ballet productions is the stage entrance of the Staatstheater; for productions in the Schauspielhaus, it is at the main entrance of the Schauspielhaus. Participants are led to a rehearsal stage or to the 3rd floor, where information about the work and the production is provided. Props, costumes, and wigs are available for exploration.
After about 45–55 minutes, participants are led across either the stage or the side stage into the seating area, depending on the current stage situation. A tactile tour of the set design may also be possible. The tour ends in the foyer.

Attending a production

In the ticket hall, participants can gain access to the Wi-Fi for the audio description. Technical support is also available if needed. The audio description begins 15 minutes before the production. Ideally, by this point, participants will have already taken their seats.

The audio description is made possible through a partnership between the Staatstheater Nürnberg, KunstKulturQuartier Nürnberg and EveryBody Access Nürnberg. This service is an important step in gradually making Nuremberg more inclusive. It is part of the Nuremberg Action Plan for implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). The Nuremberg City Council unanimously ratified the First Action Plan in December 2021. Extensive measures have been and are being developed and implemented to ensure equal inclusion of persons with and without disabilities in Nuremberg.
